Here comes the all new Chevy, ready to sway you away. In 2007 Chevy unveiled a new concept vehicle, Beat at the New York International Auto Show alongside two other concept vehicles, the Trax and the Groove. It was an attractive machine, but then it was a concept and concepts never make a full transition to production. But that's where Chevy got us! and thankfully so. Though the machine was unveiled as the third iteration of Matiz at the Seoul Motor show in late 2009, the production of Chevy's Beat started in December 2009 at its Halol Plant (Gujarat) and the product was launched in the Indian Markets at the Delhi Auto Expo in January. Since its launch Beat had taken the hatchback market by storm and has made a name for itself in the small car section. Combined with Chevrolet's marketing and customer service credibility Beat is selling like hot cakes. Check out our detailed review of the model.

This compact mean machine is powered by a 16-valve, 1199cc, 4 Cylinder engine with Double OverHead Camshaft. The power produced is good but nothing ground breaking. It produces a maximum power of 79 Bhp @ 6200 rpm and the maximum torque of 108 Nm is achieved at 4400 rpm. The car is good and well packed but not sporty, it can reach high rpms in good time but the journey at these levels is not so smooth. Beat can make a dash from 0-100 in a well timed 14.8 seconds, which is respectable for a hatchback. The transmission aids highway overtaking with the top three gears being very short but this also makes the high speed rides cranky. But the performance stays refined as long as you keep the revs down. The mileage boasted by the company is 18 kmpl on highways and 15 kmpl for the city but the machine thirsts for more and the normal mileage varies between 15-17 kmpl for the highways while it dwindles around 11-13 kmpl in the city.

Design And Comfort
The beat is almost the same design that showed up as the concept in 2007 and that is truly unconventional. A part of can be attributed to the online polls and surveys by GM, which quickly asserted that the Beat is a heartthrob. So when the Beat was launched in early 2010; it was a sure short winner. The design is appealing, youthful, peppy and innovative. All recent Chevies' have an aggressive undertone and that evident in Beat too. The front split grill and the twin-barrel headlights give the front a larger than life look while the back remains aesthetic with classic twin circular rear lights and the spoiler that flows out from the roof. The high windows and darkened rear windows add to the exuberance.

The Corvette- inspired interiors are outstanding and lively. The instrument panel is cool and includes a classic speedometer tagged with a digital LCD display for the rpm, odometer, fuel gauge and clock. The front panel is called the twin cockpit by GM and is an awesome design with neat storage spaces and a feeling that excludes the hatchback section. This top-end version also has two airbags, ABS, climate control, CD player with USB, alloy wheels and power windows as options. Legroom is ample and overall Beat gives add a luxury feel to your travel. Though the roofline is sloped, the headroom is also good. The ride is overall very comfortable but a little more knew support would have worked wonders.

Ride And Handling
Beat uses very conventional suspension techniques which result in pretty comfortable and jerk free rides. But for an indigenous car, the build quality is far superior than anything recent. One low point is the use of hydraulic power steering in Beat while most of its counterparts have moved to electronic power steering. This is a difference you may notice if you have driven any other hatchbacks from the new lot. The ride is tuned for comfort and class performance and delivery is guaranteed. But be sure that this is not a car which is made for racing the handling is a bit dodgy at high speeds but the ride is excellent for city life where speeds above 60 kmph hardly matter.

GM has never compromised with safety of their cars and their riders. Beat employs two well balanced and proper disc brakes at front and rear ends. The stopping distance fro the Beat is also reasonable. Like we mentioned before the top end version gives an option of adding ABS and two airbags to add to the safety measures.

Chevrolet Beat Price, Variants And Color
The Beat is available in 7 colors - Olympic White, Linen Beige, Caviar Black, Misty Lake, Moroccan Blue, Green Cocktail and Super Red. Beat comes in 1.2 PS, LS and LT variants with LT offering optional features mentioned above. The prices for the hatchback start at Rs 3,49,994 for the lower end version to Rs 4,10,486 for the top one. This goes up to Rs. 4,54,764 if all the options are included.
