Polo offers three engine types at your disposal two petrol engine (1.2L and 1.6L) and a 1.2L diesel. The 1.6L petrol is the pick of the lot, but it only comes in the highline variant and produces a maximum power of 105 PS @ 5250rpm and a maximum torque of 153Nm @ 3250rpm. The 1.2L options are 3 cylinder engines while the 1.6L engine comes with 4 cylinders. Transmission is 5-speed manual in all variants. The light, crisp and short-throw gearbox has the best shift quality in its segment. The economy is good with an average of 12.5 kmpl/17 kmpl for the highway in the 1.2L petrol range and for diesel it stood at 15.5 /21.5. The 1.6L has a mileage of 10.5/15.0. (City/ Highway).
Design And Comfort
The new polo has a sharper, meaner look. The front is distinct with the big VW sign in prominence. The grill merges into the headlight. The Polo is neither too long nor too tall. It's set to a right height and keeps an equally justified length. But the rear looks like someone forgot to design it but the big boot space makes up for it. But the overall sporty feel is reminiscent. Polo is based on the newer PQ25 version and significant changes for India have been carried out like an increase in ride height by 16mm to 168mm and the shock absorbers have been softened during the compression stroke to suit the Indian conditions. The driver's seat boasts of long seat travel, generous headroom and massive footwell. The seats are deeply contoured and very supportive with the right amount of cushioning. The rear sitting space is satisfactory and the width is good but lacks the kind of comfort that a premium hatchback should posses.
The interiors are top quality VW stuff with high quality material. The black-and-beige combo looks classy and the switchgear feels great to operate. While the Trendline gets only basic features, front power windows and air-con, Comfortline is only slightly better equipped with power windows all round and split seats. It's only the Highline that gets a CD MP3 player, rear wash/wipe and multi-function display. But still premium stuff like steering-mounted controls, electronic climate control, height adjustable seatbelts and power mirrors are missing.
Ride And Handling
The Polo neither hesitates nor has a tendency to stall at slow speeds and the engine pulls cleanly from even low speeds. The midrange is the engine's strongest bit and feels responsive; this is the best quality when considering city streets. But on the highway you may feel a bit out of power and may crave for more. It can dash from 0-100 in almost 17 seconds which is not up to the mark with its competitors. Low speed city riding is Polo's forte and it performs well in such conditions but highway travel is not that great. Totally the Polo is a safe and solid premium hatchback.

The brakes are superb and combined with the ABS in the highline variant make polo one safe bet. Impressive 185/60 R15 Apollo Aceleres tires are a standard on top end and optional for other variants. Polo is as sturdy and in control as a premium hatchback can get. It's built to last and can withstand tough city conditions. Moreover changing directions is super easy with its completely electronic power steering. You can literally turn the car with your finger as the steering is almost weightless.
